Rudensk is an orphanage of 185 children which is located close to Minsk, the capital of Belarus. Rudensk is special in that all of the children who call it home have been
sexually abused, come from the immediate fall-out zone of the Chernobyl reactor, or have a learning disability.
In order to get maximum impact for the relatively small amount of money we have we tend to concentrate our efforts on the worst institutions in the country. Rudensk is not one of these but we nonetheless chose to adopt it. This was partly because special
children need special care and partly because Valentine, the director of Rudensk is such an exceptional individual. Basically Valentine is the kind of character who can get €2 of value for every €1 of assistance we give him.
So far we have bought Rudensk a tractor, a hay bailer, and an industrial clothes dryer. We have also worked with another Dublin-based group headed by garda Mick O’Brien, which has taken Rudensk into its care. In the summer of 2004 we worked together to provide Rudensk with a new chicken house and a vegetable store.
